13 Sep Are you ready for the wheelchair challenge?
Did you know that over 1500 Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) occur each year in Canada alone? Based on research by Urban Futures Institute in 2010 (six years ago), Canada has over 86 000 people living with a SCI. As a therapist who provides treatment for people who have a SCI, I see some of the financial, physical, mental and emotional struggles involved.
September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time to acknowledge and support the challenges for those living with a SCI. Although technology and medical advances have come a long way in the past few years, we have a long way to go before researchers find a cure.
Spinal Cord Injury Ontario has a mission to assist people with a SCI to achieve independence, self-reliance and full community participation. Their annual wheelchair challenge is only a week away (September 18th, 2016) and you are all invited to partake in the event. Last year, NeuroChangers was a part of the festivities and it was a blast. Our therapists got a good feel for how challenging it is to get around in a manual chair.
If you’re interested in joining in the wheelchair challenge, you can enter a team on their website by clicking here. Both wheelchair users and able bodied are welcome.
