While suspended above a treadmill in a secure and stabilizing harness, the user’s legs are secured to the Lokomat’s robotic legs. The controlled motion of the robotic legs guides the user’s legs in an efficient and effective gait pattern. This motion, in addition to weight bearing through the legs, stimulates repatterning of the central nervous system. Speed, ROM, body weight support and guidance are all controlled by the therapist, and the Lokomat charts user progress with measurements for stiffness, strength, range of motion and distance.
How Does Lokomat help?
Through the process of neuroplasticity, the brain is capable of sprouting new neurons and reorganizing its functions. We can re-learn complex movements through task specific repetitive training. Simply put, you don’t play hockey to get better at soccer. If you want to walk, practice walking!
Even if treatment goals do not including walking, the Lokomat has numerous therapeutic benefits. Increased ROM and circulation, improved muscle activity, decreased spasticity, heightened proprioception, and cognitive retraining are among the other benefits associated with Lokomat gait training.
Who does the Lokomat help?
The Lokomat can be used as part of the rehabilitative program for any of the following injuries/conditions:
Lokomat Pro – Enhanced Functional Locomotion Therapy with Augmented Performance Feedback
Locomotion therapy supported by an automated gait orthosis on a treadmill has shown to be an effective intervention for improving over-ground walking function caused by neurological diseases and injuries in many cases. The Lokomat system assists walking movements of gait-impaired patients and is used to improve mobility in individuals following stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis as well as other neurological diseases and injuries. The LokomatPro has been on the market since 2001 and has been a crucial improvement in the art and science of locomotion therapy.
At Aim2Walk, the Lokomat is implemented into our unique therapy protocol so that the user will have a combination of physical, sensory and cognitive training. A supportive therapist, augmented feedback in the form of a gaming environment, and strategically placed mirrors ensure that the user is constantly engaged with therapy, resulting in maximal recovery.
The Lokomat is an amazing tool that allows our therapists to do more with our patients. It is an important piece of the puzzle of a fully integrated therapy plan.
